Remove tripping hazards: Carpets, doorsteps, floors and stairs

It is very important to remove all possible stumbling blocks in your personal home setting. If you are not good on your feet, you should remove unnecessary carpets from the appartement, to take care about a safe environment. A flat, but not too slippery floor is ideal – whether parquet, laminate or carpeting. If you don’t want to do without a carpet, you should at least secure it with a non-slip base. But you can still trip over its edge.

You can trip over anything lying on the floor. Cables lying around are also dangerous. They should be stored safely. This also applies to items such as magazines, shoes, bags and much more.

It is best to mark door thresholds and stair edges clearly. Lighting is also crucial. Looking for something in the almost dark hallway can be fatal. Better turn on the lights. The lighting generally needs to be organized cleverly. All rooms must be well and evenly lit or capable of being illuminated. This means: Sufficient light switches must be distributed so that they can be reached quickly and easily – e.g. also in bed. A tip here is to control the lighting via remote control or motion sensors.

Another good tip: wear well-fitting, closed shoes not only outside, but also in the appartement! Slippers that you just slip into may be comfortable, but they have little support and are easy to trip over.

Maybe your own stairs in the house can also be marked in color. Marking lines on the front edge of the steps make climbing stairs easier.

Think about brackets and handles. There should be places to hold things next to the bed, in the bathroom, but also in the wall near doors with thresholds. This way you can ensure your own safety before a fall and take care about a safe environment.
